Reiki is a Japanese word that was used by Mikao Usui to refer to a system of natural healing that relies on Divine energy. Reiki is a combination of two words: Rei, which means "spiritually guided" and "ki" which means chi, or energy. So the whole word, Reiki, means "spirtually guided healing energy.''
Mikao Usui was a spiritual seeker who introduced Reiki to the world after spending many days and nights in a sacred mountain. Several versions of the history of Reiki abound in the internet; the truth of the matter is there is very little authentic historical data surrounding the development of Reiki during Usui's time.
I first learned Reiki in the late 1990s. My introduction to this energy healing modality was through the more commonly known Western Reiki, which uses symbols to access the healing energy. But the use of symbols was alien to me -- when she was alive, my grandmother was a much sought -after healer in our country and I grew up seeing her heal many people after praying, fasting and meditating on the Bible a whole day prior to her healing sessions. So I searched for a teacher who practiced the traditional form of Reiki and I found Richard Gage. Richard said there was no need to attune me to Reiki and he explained that there are people who are naturally attuned to the healing energies. Later on he agreed and introduced me to the Master/Teacher level.
As opposed to western Reiki, Traditional Usui Reiki does not incorporate the use of symbols. Reiki is accessed freely and openly as a result of continuous spiritual practices which include prayer, meditation, fasting and living a soulful life. This explains why there are are many people who can heal through the laying of hands : many nuns, priests and even lay people who live spiritually-rich lives are naturally attuned to reiki.
Reiki is not a religion. Reiki is simply a word that means that the Divine healing energy is allowed to work in the human body.
Writing is my profession and Transformational Therapy is my avocation. Since January 2000, I have been combining Energy Psychology with Reiki in my work as a Transformational Therapist.
As a Reiki Transformational Therapist, I have helped people heal their traumas, phobias, addictions, obsessive compulsions, depression, sleep disorders, cancer, heart aches and a myriad of physical ailments.
How Reiki Heals
Reiki is a Japanese word which means "spiritually-guided healing energy." Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the body and the energy field and by charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body and works on the negative thoughts, feelings, memories. This causes the negative energies to break down and fall away which in turn frees the body's energies so that healing can take place. In cases of physical trauma or illness, reiki provides additional energy which helps the organs, tissues and cells to go back to a state of homostaesis and balance.
Reiki energy clears and heals the energy pathways, allowing the "life force energy" to flow in a healthy and natural way. During a reiki session, the person experiences an increase in the flow of "life force energy." In this state reiki cleanses the body of built-up toxins, frees the body from compounded effects of stress, relieves pain, calms the mind and relaxes the muscles, releases pent-up emotions and accelerates the body's natural ability to heal. Research and studies have verified the efficacy of reiki, which is why it is now offered as additional therapy in several hospitals in the US and Europe. One of the staunchest proponents of reiki is Dr. Memeth Oz, who is one of the leading cardiovascular surgeons in the United States. He recently endorsed Reiki in his show, "The Dr. Oz Show." He encouraged viewers to "Try Reiki," and said that that was his number one recommendation.
What Happens During a Session
A Reiki Session is a series of laying of hands on different parts of the body. This results in the balancing of energies and a general feeling of relaxation and well-being.
A Reiki Transformational Therapy session is very different and this is why I tell people who are interested in a relaxation therapy to go to a Reiki practitioner instead.
Change is the key word in Reiki Transformational Therapy. Anyone who wants to change her/his life-- to heal and live a more vibrant and fulfilling life -- is the person who will benefit most from Reiki Transformational Therapy sessions.
I always ask my clients not to tell me why they need healing. During a session, the client is asked to lie down, fully clothed. I ask the client to relax while I lay my hands on the head and sense the energies that are blocking the flow of energy in the body. After a few minutes, I tell the client what negative energies and emotions are blocking the body, and what areas of the body or the person's life are compromised by the presence of the emotional baggage.
Clients are always surprised when I tell them what their bodies are communicating to me. The truth is, our bodies are always telling us what's wrong with us -- we just don't listen.
The client is then asked to decide which issue she or he would want to deal with first.
It is not necessary to talk about the issue or the circumstances that are causing the problem. The client is asked to bring them to mind and allow the emotions to surface. But some people feel better when they talk about the problem and I assure them that everything is confidential.
It takes several minutes to wash away the repressed emotions that had been allowed to surface and for the Reiki --- Divinely guided healing energy -- to remove the blockages and replace the negative energies with pure, healing energy. After this, the energies are rebalanced and my guarantee is that the client will feel markedy better and lighter as the session comes to an end.
Healing is an individual affair. Some people heal faster than others because they are ready to move on, to get better, to change. Some people need more time...and so, the number of sessions needed to reach a state of homostaesis differs from one person to another.
As a rule, I never tell clients to come back. I ask them to see how they'll feel after a couple of days and then decide whether they want another session. The clients decide how often they want to have their sessions. They are in charge of their healing and my role is merely to help them rediscover their own healing abilities. Once they reach that state, they are able to heal themselves on a daily basis.
No Crystals, No Rituals
I am frequently asked if I use crystals in my sessions. I don't use anything other than my hands which act as channels for God's healing energy. Prayer, meditation and daily spiritual practices are my "tools."
I am also asked if I do rituals. I conduct honest to goodness healing therapy. I do not perform rituals.
In the course of studying the science of energy, I learned how to sense the cause of blockages in places as well. I am also a medium and so I am frequently asked to assess the energies of homes that are supposedly haunted. Genuine hauntings are not as common as we are made to believe. Most times the "hauntings" are the result of blocked or stagnant energies caused by the lack of air circulation, electrical appliances and the negative energies of those living in the place -- and so many other energy disruptions.
A 1 1/2-hour session costs PHP 2,000.00. I do housecalls on weekdays anywhere from Las Pinas City to the Makati area. Sessions can be held in 3741 Bautista St. Palanan, Makati during weekends and holidays.
I teach Reiki First Degree. Couse Fee is P 2,500. I only teach Reiki 2nd degree on a case to case basis.

In the late 1800s a Japanese spiritual seeker by the name of Mikao Usui climbed Mt. Kurama, which was considered a sacred mountain. His sole purpose was to find the answer to the question, "What is the ultimate purpose of life?" Usui fasted and meditated for twenty one days and it is generally believed that he attained enlightenment on the twenty first day. From that time on Mikao Usui dedicated his life to healing through a natural system which he called "reiki."
Reiki (ray-kee) means "spiritually guided healing energy." It is an ancient, natural healing method involving the laying of hands on the body and channeling universal energy. A Reiki treatment brings about reduction in stress levels, resulting in deep relaxation that allows the person to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve health and enhance the quality of life.
How Reiki Heals
We are alive because "life force energy" is flowing through us. This energy flows within the physical body and it also flows around us in a field of energy. In addition to food, air and water this "life force energy" nourishes the organs and cells of the body and supports their vital functions. It is responsive to thoughts, feelings and experiences. When the natural flow of the "life force energy" is blocked or distorted, the organs and tissues are unable to function effectively.
As a result, disease patterns arise and negatively affect the person's emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Stress, trauma and unresolved issues are the main forms of negative energies which disrupt the natural flow of "life force energy" in the body.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the body and the energy field and by charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts, feelings, memories and impressions are attached. This causes the negative energies to break up and fall away. Reiki clears and heals the energy pathways, allowing the "life force energy" to flow in a healthy and natural way.
During a reiki session, the person experiences an increase in the flow of "life force energy." In this state Reiki cleanses the body of built-up toxins, relieves pain, calms the mind and relaxes the muscles, releases pent-up emotions and accelerates the body's natural ability to heal.
Reiki in hospitals
Reiki is now widely practiced in the western world particularly in the United States and Europe. Reiki practitioners in these countries can now be found working in hospitals where they assist patients during critical medical procedures.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, who is one of the leading cardiovascular surgeons in the United States was one of the first to include a reiki practitioner in his department at The Columbia Presbyterian Medical Centre in New York City where he runs the heart assist device program and the Complementary Care Centre. The New York Times Magazine reported that Dr. Oz has allowed the use of reiki during open heart surgeries and heart transplant operations. Says Dr. Oz: "Reiki has become a sought-after healing art among patients and mainstream medical professionals."
Since 1998, the Columbia/HCA Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire had been giving their surgical patients the option of 15 min pre- and post- surgery reiki treatments. As a result of this, there has been less use of pain medication, shorter length of stay in the hospital and an increase in patient satisfaction.
In the Reiki Clinic at Tucson Medical Center in Arizona, a team of Reiki practitioners give reiki to patients. Reiki was first offered to patients in the Cancer Care Unit but has since expanded to other units in the hospital after it had been proven that pain, chronic conditions, and post operative surgery conditions all responded well to reiki.
One of the largest hospitals in northern California is the California Pacific Medical Center and here, Dr. Mike Cantwell, a pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases, provides one to three hour-long reiki sessions. When asked how reiki helps his patients Cantwell said, "I have found reiki to be useful in the treatment of acute illnesses such as musculoskeletal injury, pain, headache, acute infections and asthma. Reiki is also useful for patients with chronic illnesses especially those associated with chronic pain."
Reiki practitioners are also becoming mainstays in delivery rooms in hospitals where reiki is given to mothers and babies to help alleviate the trauma of the birthing process. Tests conducted at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut show that Reiki used during pregnancy reduced anxiety by 94 percent, nausea by 80 percent, pain by 78 percent and improved sleep by 86 percent.
More research and scientific studies are being conducted to further verify the efficacy of reiki and through the years many hospitals in the west have incorporated reiki in their programs.
Dr. Nancy Eos of the University of Michigan Medical School is one of the increasing number of doctors who incorporates reiki in their medical practice. "I can't imagine practicing medicine without Reiki," Eos says. "With Reiki all I have to do is touch a person. Things happen that don't usually happen. Pain lessens in intensity. Rashes fade. Wheezing gives way to breathing clearly. Angry people begin to joke with me."
Although it takes much practice and study before one can qualify to be a teacher or reiki hospital worker, anyone can learn reiki for self healing. The easiest way is to attend a reiki class. You can choose to learn Western Reiki, which incorporates the use of symbols, or Traditional Usui Reiki which follows the healing system that Mikao Usui practiced.
Traditional reiki practitioners believe that we all have the ability to heal ourselves because universal energy flows through each of us. But the stresses of modern living usually block this flow. However, a person who has a regular spiritual practice that includes silence, solitude and prayer can readily access reiki and use it for self-healing. You can follow the basic hand positions for self-healing and with patience you can experience this very simple yet immensely powerful natural way of healing
